Choice
Pick the suite that matches the file you cannot afford to break.
WPS is a strong free editor for ordinary DOCX. It is not a stealth Microsoft 365 license. Google wins when the whole class already lives in a browser. LibreOffice wins when you need a fully free desktop stack. This site is an independent handbook and is not affiliated with Kingsoft Office Software Corporation Limited.

| Need | Lean WPS | Lean elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Open DOCX without a subscription | Yes, daily | LibreOffice also |
| VBA macros and SharePoint | Fragile | Microsoft 365 |
| Realtime class comments | Possible via Cloud | Google Docs is simpler |
| Offline Linux lab | After fonts | LibreOffice is the default |
| PDF OCR at volume | Often paid | Dedicated OCR or Adobe |
| Phone scanner on a bus | Yes, official apps | Google Drive scan also |
| Zero-cost desktop with Word muscle memory | Usually WPS | LibreOffice if principle wins |
Versus Microsoft 365
Choose Microsoft when macros, Teams, SharePoint libraries, and corporate templates are the job. Choose WPS when the budget is zero and the files are ordinary. Round-trip a real contract before you delete Word. A campus seat you already paid for is cheaper than discovering VBA on the night of the deadline.
Versus Google
Google wins on a Chromebook with a school account. WPS wins on a Windows laptop that must work on a bus without Wi-Fi. They can coexist: draft in WPS, paste a share link only when you must. Do not force a class through WPS Cloud for ideology if Drive is already the homework bus.
Versus LibreOffice
LibreOffice is open source and asks nothing at the PDF wall. WPS often feels closer to Word’s ribbon. If principle is the point, LibreOffice. If muscle memory is the point, try WPS first. See compatibility. Linux labs that already ship LibreOffice should not add a second suite without a font plan.
A practical rule
Pick the suite that matches the file you cannot afford to break. Daily notes can live in WPS. Payroll macros and court filings might not. The round-trip guide is the test; marketing format lists are not.
They can sit on the same machine
WPS does not require you to uninstall Microsoft 365. Many shops keep Word for macros and WPS for letters. The hazard is file associations: after a WPS install, double-clicking a DOCX may open the wrong suite. Set defaults on purpose. Uninstall leftovers can steal them again; see the after-uninstall guide.
