Writer is the room you actually live in.

If you only open one WPS app, it is this one. It speaks DOCX. It does not erase the need for a second pair of eyes on legal layout. This site is an independent handbook and is not affiliated with Kingsoft Office Software Corporation Limited.

What works without paying

Typing, styles, headers, comments, track-like markup, and Save As DOCX are the free path. Ads can sit in the chrome. You do not pay to write a letter. You may pay later if you convert a stack of scans or if you want the banners gone. Mail merge exists; it is picky about the data sheet. See mail merge.

Where files go wrong

PDF-to-Word leaves text boxes. A designer’s section breaks may collapse. Tracked changes from Word can look complete until you print. Keep Heading styles. Delete leftover frames. Round-trip before you send. If the other party’s lawyer lives in Microsoft Word, send PDF as the snapshot and keep DOCX as your working copy.

Styles, not floating boxes

After a convert, turn on formatting marks. Reapply Heading 1 and Heading 2 instead of enlarging random bold runs. A table of contents built on styles survives; a table of contents built on hope does not. This is the difference between a thesis that reflows and a thesis that becomes a collage.

Defaults and languages

If double-clicking a DOCX opens the wrong program after a trial of another suite, fix associations. See file associations and UI languages. The ribbon language is not the document language: you can write Hindi in an English UI if the fonts exist.

When Writer is the wrong room

VBA-heavy templates, nested legal numbering that must match a court style sheet, and mailings already wired to Microsoft’s data sources should stay in Word. WPS is the home editor. It is not a stealth Microsoft 365 license. Compare suites on compare.

A useful first hour in Writer

  1. Set Save As to DOCX if you share with Word users.
  2. Turn on formatting marks. Rebuild Heading 1 and Heading 2 on any converted PDF.
  3. Type a real letter, export PDF, and open that PDF in another reader.
  4. If mail merge is the job, prove one row from a clean header sheet. See mail merge.
  5. Skip WPS AI until ordinary typing feels boring. A prompt is not a citation.
